Laird and Lawrie stir Scottish golfing revival
Even before Laird's triumph at the Arnold Palmer Invitational tournament last Sunday, there was ample proof of his development into a performer of genuine quality at the highest level. That ambition might be beyond Lawrie, but the Aberdonian emphatically proved that he remains a resilient competitor with his first victory for nine years against a tough field. and he has guaranteed his place at the £2.9m Volvo World Match Play Championship in Spain , two months hence, on merit. In fact, with Lyle also recording his first tournament win for 19 years at the ISPS Handa Senior World Championship in China in 2011, this is turning into a bright season across the board for Scots on the fairways."I knew that I wasn't good enough when I first came over [to the US in 2000]. I knew that I had to work hard and, over the last few years, I've been a grinder. But now, all those hours on the range and on the greens have finally paid off for me," says Laird, who was a pivotal part of a Magic Weekend for Scottish golf, with Paul Lawrie, the 1999 Open winner, also securing the Andalucia Open in Spain.
